THE UPSIDE OF SPORTSWEAR

For the resort 2017 collection, Jodhi Meares takes us soul surfing with her Hawaiian-inspired collection.

Australia might not have the biggest, boldest men’s fashion industry in the world, but there’s no denying that we do one thing well: sportswear. Indeed, it’s basically ingrained in our national cultural identity, so it’s fitting that as the athleisure market continues to grow unabated, local brands should lead the way. That’s certainly the case with The Upside, the positively-titled brand by designer Jodhi Meares. In just a few years, the designer has expanded her online activewear store to a fully-fledged lifestyle brand, bridging the gap between contemporary fashion and sports, with stockists including Selfridges, Net-a-Porter, Lane Crawford and Harrods.

For the resort 2017 collection, Meares and her team headed to Hawaii, finding inspiration in the Japanese design and cultural influences felt in the area of Oahu, with an Irezumi dragon motif, metallic logos and palm prints featured throughout. Our pick, though, is the Soul Surfing sweater, as pictured here from the recent edition of Manuscript. Fashion is non-stop, thrilling and ever-evolving, but Meares reminds us to slow down.
