As a social media tool, Instagram is perhaps the most capable of eliciting an emotional response from its viewer. Whether it’s rage, jealousy, laughter, happiness or a combination of all, there’s something to be said for the power of an image. In the case of Citizens of the World, that response - typically one of being inspired - is amplified, as is the case when you’re overcome by a truly great image. Essentially a platform to document their global travels, Citizens of the World is the engaging publication of couple Meghan Loneragan, a writer, and Dominic Loneragan, a photographer, profiling and presenting the inspiring people, places and things that dot the world. “We found that our joy lied in telling stories,” says the pair. “The images are the ultimate first impression that draw people in, and the words are what gives Citizens of the World the credibility to bring people back. We drive each other to keep going and push each other to experiment.”
Originally launched as an artisan maker of candles, Citizens of the World now functions solely as a creative travel blog, with features about the best (and oftentimes most interesting) hotels, restaurants, bars and interiors, and interviews with everyone from jeweler Jordan Askill to model Megan Gale. Of their favourite destination, the couple nominates South Africa. “It’s a country of such contrasting history and cultures. A place where one minute you’ll be in wine country and the next eating barbecue at a traditional braai.” Images from this journey, along with those to such excellent destinations at Hong Kong, Macau and Tulum, can be seen on the Citizens of the World website and Instagram.
