If you’ve said or heard a friend in the fashion industry say that it’s always fashion week somewhere, it’s because the global calendar is so full that there’s barely a day that goes by in which one city or another isn’t promoting its wares to an international audience. New York City is, of course, one of the world’s major four players, and despite it introducing a men’s week - held in July - for the first time this year, some menswear has trickled across to its current womenswear week, which kicks off the seasonal circuit, followed by London, Milan and Paris.
On Saturday at Spring Studios was the presentation of the Lacoste spring summer 2016 runway collection by artistic director Felipe Oliveira Baptiste. Entitled The Olympic Spirit, the collection celebrates Lacoste’s duty as the official outfitter for the French Olympic delegation (including parade, medal ceremony and village outfits, all of which feature its iconic crocodile motif). But while Lacoste is tied up in French culture, its spring summer 2016 collection was a celebration of sporting and its ability to bring together nations, with prints eschewed for the bold-hued graphics of various national flags and the incorporation of aeronautical references.
The 1980s-style gymnastic vests, parachute straps, ribbed trimmings and jersey knits demonstrated Lacoste’s nous as a sportswear brand. A series of ponchos were inspired by British artist Lucy Orta’s Refuge Wear, using the silver finish of emergency blankets to play with the luxurious and the functional.
