It’s hard to believe that it’s March already, but you’ve been beavering away at your desk and attempting to keep New Year’s resolutions, Sydney Dance Company has been hard at work on perhaps its most ambitious project yet. Tonight in Sydney, the company will debut it new season, Frame of Mind, followed by a run in Canberra and Melbourne over the next two months. A double bill, Frame of Mind comprises two pieces, both in their Australian premiere. William Forsythe’s Quintett is considered to be the renowned choreographer’s most poignant masterpiece, delicate and lyrical in its movement, and set to a composition by Gavin Bryar. To assist the company members in adopting Mr Forsythe’s inimitable technique, Ballet Frankfurt dancers Thomas McManus and Ana Catalina Roman journeyed to Sydney to oversee the re-staging of the iconic performance.
Pitted against this piece is a new work by Sydney Dance Company’s artistic director Rafael Bonachela, after which the production is named, and is set to music by Bryce Dessner of The National and with design by Ralph Myers, who is collaborating with the company for the first time. And excitingly, five new faces join the company this year following the departure of others in 2014, thus the return of one of the company’s favourite faces, and Helpmann Award winner, Richard Cilli. Tickets are on sale now.
