Under the direction of Tony Ellwood, the National Gallery of Victoria continues its run of engaging contemporary art shows with the forthcoming opening of The Kaleidoscopic Turn next month. Drawn from the gallery’s permanent collection and comprising a number of recent acquisitions, the exhibition showcases artworks that experiment with light, colour, movement, space and optical illusions, beginning, as does that movement of art, from the 1960s with the launch of Op Art by Bridget Riley and running right through to newly made pieces. “The Kaleidoscopic Turn will showcase the NGV’s rich collection of knetic, op, geometric and sound art, presenting works which go beyond the boundaries of traditional static artworks to provoke intense and lively engagement,” explains Mr Ellwood. Artists featured will include Elizabeth Newman, Marco Fusinato, Matt Hinkley, Diene Georgetti and John Nixon alongside emerging talents Jonny Niesche, Briony Gilligan and Rafaella McDonald.
