Where the majority of the fashion world continually shifts its style to remain relevant, Felipe Oliveira Baptista needn’t change a thing. At Lacoste, where he serves as creative director, the designer this season looked to the sporting label’s own heritage - and, in particular, its founder, tennis player Rene Lacoste - for inspiration, reinventing the established codes in a collection that mashes together elements of Art Deco refinement with the colourful, graphic elements of the 1970s. The result: a casual albeit tailored range of sweaters, club blazers, overcoats and sneakers in acidic lime green, purple, gold and red, a sort of Royal Tenenbaums humour imbued throughout with slogans like “Tennis anyone?” and “Rene did it first”.
